API and webhooks

A towing software API and signed webhooks for your own tools

Last updated

The short answer

A towing software API lets another system create jobs, read them and react to them without anyone retyping. TowSitePros has a REST API with keys you create yourself, signed webhooks for every job event, an OpenAPI document, and a CSV import for history.

What can you do with the towing API?

You can create jobs, list and read them, change them, assign them to a unit, add notes and read the timeline. You can also read your roster with each unit's last shared position, read your services and rate card, and manage your webhook endpoints.

A job created by the API behaves exactly like one a dispatcher typed. It appears on the dispatch board, on the driver page and on the customer tracking page, and it queues the same texts when texting is on and the customer agreed.

  • Push jobs in from a motor club feed, a fleet account or your own intake form
  • Pull jobs out to billing, accounting or a spreadsheet
  • Assign a job so the driver is texted their link
  • Reopen a finished job with a reason

How do keys and permissions work?

You create a key in the dashboard under Developers and send it as a bearer token. Each key carries only the scopes you give it, such as reading jobs, writing jobs, reading the roster, reading services or managing webhooks, so you can give each connected system its own key and revoke one without touching the others.

A key is shown once and only a hash is stored. There are limits on how many calls a key can make, and a system that goes over gets a clear response telling it when to retry. The commercial accounts directory has a scope of its own, off by default.

How do webhooks tell your system what happened?

You add a secure endpoint under Developers and choose the events you want, or all of them. We send one signed JSON message for each event, such as a job created, assigned or changed, a customer message, a rating received, a photo added, a signature captured or a payment updated.

Each delivery is signed with a secret so your system can check it came from us and reject old ones. A failed delivery is retried over about a day and a half, an endpoint that keeps failing is paused, and you can send a test and see the last deliveries and what your system answered.

Can I use it without writing code?

Yes, if your automation tool has a webhook trigger and an HTTP request step. Zapier, Make and n8n can react to job events and create jobs with your key, without a developer.

For history, there is a CSV import under Developers. It checks the file first, skips rows whose reference is already on a job instead of overwriting them, and never texts anyone for an imported job. An OpenAPI document describes every endpoint for anyone who does write code.

What does the API not do?

It does not carry everything the dashboard does. Photos, archiving and link management stay in the dashboard for now, and the API does not take payments or connect to a motor club dispatch network for you.

It is also not a substitute for judgment about what to automate. If you push jobs in from another system, the PO rule on a commercial account is not enforced on API jobs, so send a reference yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a developer to use the API?

Not always. A developer makes the most of it, but a no-code tool like Zapier, Make or n8n can call the API and receive webhooks. The OpenAPI document and the developer docs describe every endpoint.

Will an API-created job text my customer?

It queues the same texts as any other job, but only when texting is switched on and consent is recorded on that job. Jobs brought in by CSV import never send texts.

Can I be told when a customer rates a job?

Yes. A rating received is one of the events a webhook can carry, along with customer messages, photos added and payment changes. You choose which events go to which endpoint.

How do I know a webhook really came from you?

Every delivery carries a signature made with your endpoint secret, plus the time it was sent. Your code recomputes the signature, compares it and rejects anything too old.
