Custom domain

Put your towing website on your own custom domain

Last updated

The short answer

To use a custom domain for your towing website, you add it in the dashboard, then add the DNS records the Domains screen shows you at your domain provider. A TXT record proves you own the domain, a root domain gets an A record, and www or another subdomain gets a CNAME. Then you verify it and choose which domain is primary.

How do you connect a custom domain to your towing website?

You connect a domain in three steps. Add it under Website, Domains in the dashboard, add the DNS records the screen shows you at your domain provider, and press verify once they have spread across the internet.

The screen shows the exact records for the exact domain you typed, each with a copy button, so you do not have to retype long values. You can add more than one domain to a site and mark one as primary, which is the address your pages tell search engines is the real one.

  • A TXT record with a verification value, which proves you control the domain
  • For a root domain such as example.com, an A record that points it at the platform
  • For www or any other subdomain, a CNAME record that points it at the platform
  • Verify from the Domains screen, then set the primary domain

Which record does a root domain need, and which does www need?

A root domain, the bare name with nothing in front of it, gets an A record, because the DNS rules do not allow a CNAME at that spot. You do not need a provider with any special feature for that, since the Domains screen gives you the address to use. If the name already has an A or AAAA record, remove it first, because an old one would keep sending visitors to the old site.

A subdomain such as www gets a CNAME that points at the platform instead. To have both work, add the A record for the root and a CNAME for www, then choose which one is primary. If you use Cloudflare, set every one of these records to DNS only, the grey cloud, and leave the proxy off.

What happens after ownership is verified?

Once the TXT record is found, the domain is attached to the platform hosting automatically, and HTTPS is set up for it when automatic hosting setup is switched on for the platform. If it is not, the screen says our team will finish connecting the domain by hand.

The Domains screen shows where each domain stands, with a plain message when something is still pending or needs a fix. The platform keeps re-checking on its own for a while, and once it has stopped, a Check again button runs another check after you have corrected the records.

How long does the domain setup take?

DNS changes often show up within a few minutes, and some providers take much longer. Set the records, wait, then verify, and if it says the record is not found yet, try again later rather than changing it.

Your site stays reachable at its platform address while you wait, so a slow DNS provider does not take your business offline.

What do we not promise about a custom domain?

We do not promise a specific time for the secure certificate, and we do not promise that every DNS provider will accept every record the same way. If yours will not take an A record on the root, use www as the main address and redirect the root to it at your registrar.

You also stay in control of the domain itself. It stays registered in your account at your provider, so it goes with you if you ever leave, and your email keeps working as long as you leave your MX records alone.

What happens to search and old addresses when you switch?

Once a domain is verified and primary, your pages point search engines at it as the canonical address, and your site's sitemap and robots file follow that host. Moving domains still takes search engines time to catch up, and no tool can control that.

If your old website had its own addresses, list them under Old addresses and send each one to the right page on the new site, as a permanent or a temporary redirect, so people who saved or linked them do not hit a dead end.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell domain names?

This page assumes you already own the domain and manage it at your own registrar or DNS host. You add the records there, and the domain stays in your account.

Can I use more than one domain?

Yes. A site can have more than one custom domain, and you mark one as primary. The others still reach the site, and the primary is the address your pages present as canonical.

Does the root domain need special DNS support?

No. A root domain uses the A record the Domains screen shows you, together with the TXT record. Only www and other subdomains use a CNAME. If your provider will not accept the A record, use www as the main address and redirect the root to it.

Will connecting the domain break my email?

Not if you leave your email records alone. The records you add are a TXT record plus an A record or a CNAME, and the screen warns you not to remove your MX records, which is what carries your email.

What if I leave later?

Your domain and your content go with you. The domain lives at your registrar, so you can point it anywhere, and your jobs and reports can be exported through CSV and the API.
